Chico >> The search for a University Police Department chief has been narrowed down to three candidates, according to Chico State University.
Chico State announced recently three men from around California are being considered to take over UPD once Chief Robyn Hearne retires.
Hearne, whose been at the helm of the department since 2011, announced in November her intention to retire.
San Francisco Police Department Capt. John Feeney, Orange County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Miller and University of Southern California Department of Public Safety Lt. David Brunckhurst were named finalists and will meet with university officials in the coming days for interviews.
According to Chico State, each candidate will spend a full day on campus to meet with students, staff, faculty and administrators.
The men, who were selected from 15 applicants, also will be holding community forums between Friday and Tuesday.
On Friday, the campus community is being invited to meet Feeney from 3:45-4:45 p.m. in Bell Memorial Union (BMU) Room 203.
Miller will host the forum on Monday from 3:45-4:45 p.m. in BMU Room 210 and Brunckhurst’s meeting will be during the same time slot Tuesday in BMU Room 220G.
Feeney has spent 28 years with the San Francisco Police Department, according to his resume.
In 2013, Feeney was one of five candidates being considered to run the Hillsboro Police Department in Oregon, according to a Hillsboro Tribune article. The agency received 62 applications.
Miller started as a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in 1989, according to his website. He has spent more than 26 years in law enforcement and 13 years in supervisory and managerial positions.
Brunckhurst is part of the administrative bureau at USC’s police department.
According to his LinkedIn account, he spent 23 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, and was a law enforcement consultant and attorney for 17 years.
In November 2014, Hearne’s retirement was announced to the campus through a message from Vice President for Business and Finance Lori Hoffman.
Hearne will remain in her position until Chico State names her replacement, according to Hoffman’s announcement.
